You’ll glimpse two-story haul trucks, super-sized electric shovels and more as they operate in Hibbing Taconite’s mining operations. Kids will enjoy climbing on mining equipment and shopping at the small gift store. This site is open daily May 21-September 30, when friendly volunteers answer questions and point out what’s happening within the mine.

Minnesota's Iron Range is located in the state's far northeastern corner and includes the following counties: Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and Saint Louis. Iron mines were generally of two types: open pit and underground. The Iron Range includes three major iron ore deposits: Mesabi Range, Vermilion Range, and the Cuyuna Range.

Iron ore was first discovered in Ely in 1883, near the west end of the flooded, abandonded mine that is now called Miner's Lake. After the addition of the railroad in 1888, the mines began shipping the iron ore to the docks of Lake Superior in Two Harbors, MN.

Iron miners would go into mines everyday. They didn't have sick days and were put in dangerous conditions. They put their lives at stake for two dollars a day. Most of the iron mines in Minnesota were close to Lake Superior, less than one hundred miles away. Train would take the ore to docks to be loaded on ships.
