Vertical roller mill is a kind of grinding machine for cement, raw material, cement clinker, slag and coal slag. It has the features of simple structure and low cost of manufacture and use. Vertical roller mill has many different forms, but it works basically the same.

In this unit, the proportioned raw materials are being ground to the size of (10% residual on 90 μm sieve) by closed circuit ball mill in line 1 and Vertical Roller Mill (VRM) in Line 2. While grinding; the raw materials are being dried from 4% moisture content to <1% using the excess hot gas emitted from pyrporocessing system.

2.10.2 Vertical Mills. For more than 50 years vertical mills have been the mill of choice for grinding raw materials into raw meal. More recently they have become widely used for cement production. They have lower specific energy consumption than ball mills and the separator, as in raw mills, is integral with the mill body.

Capacity has increased from as low as 50 tpd to as high as 12000 tpd from kiln.

Ground raw meal should not have more than 1% moisture and coal not more than 2%. These days, generally, vertical roller mills are used to grind both raw materials and coal. Therefore minimum moisture in feed is taken as 5%, although in countries like India moisture in raw materials may be as low as 2% in dry seasons.

Roller press with ball mill is used to grind the clinker. 3.5 to 4% Gypsum is added to make OPC. To make PPC, up to 35 % fly ash is added to the clinker in addition to Gypsum. Three grades of cement (OPC 43, 53 and PPC) are manufactured and stored in silos.
